Islamic Art Exhibit Opening at Les Idees Gallery
Posted on September 3, 2014

The Christian-Muslim Dialogue Committee (CMDC) is sponsoring an exhibition of Islamic art featuring Pittsburgh-based artists in the Les Idees Gallery on the third floor of the Union.

The exhibit, which will run from Thursday, Sept. 4, through Tuesday, Sept. 30, supports the CMDC’s mission to provide a platform for multiple perspectives between Christians and Muslims, and to promote healthy and peaceful relationships.

“Art is one way that the CMDC is working to forge a healthy Muslim-Christian relationship between the University community, the global Christian community and the Muslim world, especially Muslims in Pittsburgh,” explained Dr. Marinus Iwuchukwu, chair of the CMDC.

The four artists whose work will appear in the exhibition are based in Pittsburgh. Three of them—Mina Aldoori, Ghofran Shaker and Hadeel Jawad Salameh—are undergraduate students at different colleges and universities in the city. The fourth—Dr. Hoda Moustapha—is a professional artist who lives and works in Pittsburgh.

The art in the gallery will reflect the diversity in the Islamic world and include both deeply religious pieces as well as cultural and ideological works.

“Even though the theme is the same, each artist and their works are different, because each of them views their experiences from the perspective of different cultures within the Islamic world,” said Iwuchukwu.

The exhibit can be viewed at the Les Idees Gallery during regular business hours.
