John Quincy Adams Society Essay Contest: America in the Middle East/War Powers

Announced by University of Pittsburgh:

John Quincy Adams Society Essay Contest: America in the Middle East/War Powers

The John Quincy Adams Society is asking college students to weigh in on either of the pressing questions below. JQAS is partnering with The National Interest—one of Washington’s most important foreign-policy magazines – to sponsor an essay contest. JQAS is looking for professional, articulate, and insightful analysis. TNI will showcase the winners, where the essays can influence policymakers, scholars, and staffers helping to shape American policy. The winner will also be given a cash prize and have a spot in the 2020 John Quincy Adams Society Summer Leadership Conference in Washington D.C.

The two prompts are:

1. What vital national interests (if any) does the United States have in the Middle East? Considering that, what should America’s military presence (if any) and willingness to use force in the Middle East look like?
2. What ability (if any) should a President have to initiate military force abroad without Congressional authorization?
